September 29 - October 3 (TUE-SAT, 9 AM–4 PM)
Dubbelbindning is a simple Scandinavian double-weave structure using bold blocks of color that create textiles with reversed patterns on the underside. Starting with a tight sett you’ll weave thinner samples before changing your sett to weave heavier rug samplers. Due to the strong geometric nature of this technique you’ll spend a significant amount of time planning and designing polychrome drafts that you will “paint" with fantastic Harrisville Highland colors. This is an intensive, beautifully vibrant class where you’ll learn how to design pleasing geometric patterns using 2 to 5 colors; play with sett and weft bundling to create balanced weft-faced textiles; understand basic color theory for weft-faced textiles; start and end your rug with sturdy decorative headers; perfect your angling and beat; execute clean selvedges; and securely finish your edges. You’ll leave this 5-day workshop excited to design a multitude of dubbelbindning projects for your home! A Harrisville Designs Model A4 loom is provided, along with all necessary equipment and our 100% woolen yarns in 64 colors.

Please note: This is a rigorous class designed for intermediate weavers only. You must be able to warp your loom in 3 hours.

Skill Level: Intermediate. See note above. Students must be proficient at dressing a loom and be able to read weaving drafts independently.

Materials List: Notebook, slippers or socks, pens, pencils, scissors.

*If you reserve a room in the Boarding House, your room fee is due at the end of your stay. Please scroll down to read more important information about the Cheshire Mills Boarding House.

Cancellation Deadline: 8/4/2026

MEET YOUR TEACHER

Stephanie Morton studied ethnic weaving in various countries while at Friends World College. She has since continued weaving and dyeing using traditional hand tools, looms and techniques; she is committed to slow, sustainable textile practices using recycled and local materials. A professional weaver and instructor with a studio in Guilderland, New York, Stephanie’s work continues to be guided by the idea that fabrics made by human hands are imbued with something more than just technical excellence; they express human ideas, energy and emotion that enrich their practical value.

About Our Workshops

Nestled in the heart of a historic textile village, workshops at Harrisville Designs take place in the Bethuel Harris Mill. Built in the 1830s as a spinning mill for locally raised wool and located at the end of the canal, it originally operated on water power. Today, it’s home to our first-floor retail store and spacious second-floor workshop studio. Year after year students are greeted by sunlit windows, fresh air, and tranquil views of the mill pond and preserved industrial brick buildings.

Workshops vary in skill levels and lengths. Enrollment is limited to ensure each student is immersed in the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom. Most scheduled classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while their class is in session. Looms are provided in the weaving classes, and woolen yarn and other materials are included unless otherwise noted in the materials lists online. While taking a class, students receive a 10% discount on HD items in our store, including looms! (Excludes sale and consignment items)
