225 YARDS AMERICAN COLUMBIA WOOL

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The smaller sibling to our worsted weight Tones yarn, Tones Light is a versatile fingering weight, woolen-spun from fleece-dyed American Columbia wool into light and dark shades of springy 2-ply yarn that we overdye to create a harmonious palette of coordinated “tone pairs”.

Choose your favorite color’s light, bright Overtone, or the deeper, more subdued Undertone. Craft vibrant combinations using Overtones and Undertones of different hues, or choose a more subtle approach by pairing an Overtone and Undertone from the same colorway. Soft, durable, and ideal for lightweight garments, accessories, lace, and colorwork.

FIBER CHARACTERISTICS

Columbia sheep raised in Wyoming provide the wool for Tones Light. One of the first sheep breeds developed in the United States, this large, friendly mediumwool breed began in 1912 in Laramie, Wyoming, as a cross between longwool Lincoln rams and finewool Rambouillet ewes. They produce thick white fleeces with robust substance, wonderful for warm and durable sweaters, accessories, and blankets.

DYE PROCESS

We begin with natural white wool, then dye a portion black, blending and spinning it into light and dark heathered base yarns. These are overdyed in brilliant hues using traditional skein dyeing methods, creating harmonious Tone Pairs to mix and match in colorwork, stripes, and solids.

GAUGES

As a result of its lofty woolen-spun construction, Tones Light knits wonderfully at a variety of gauges and can be used interchangeably with Loft.

  • 6 - 8 stitches to 1"
  • Suggested Needle: 2 - 3.5 mm (US 0 - 4)
  • Suggested Hook: 2.25 - 4 mm (US B-1 - G-6)

    CARE

Tones Light is a handcrafted product. For best results, we recommend alternating skeins when joining in a new skein for even color distribution.

    WET BLOCKING

    1. Fill a sink or basin with cold water.
    2. Submerge the fabric in water, gently squeezing out any air bubbles so that the piece can remain under water without being held there.
    3. Soak work for 15 minutes, allowing fabric to become completely saturated.
    4. Remove excess moisture by rolling your fabric between clean, dry towels with light pressure.
    5. Lay fabric flat and shape to air dry.
