October 14-18 (TUE-SAT, 9 AM–4 PM)
Take the next step in creating increasingly intricate designs using Boundweave on 4 harnesses. The vibrant colors of Harrisville Highland yarns make your weaving come alive, as color and ever-changing patterns are created in this weft-faced rug sampler class. You’ll gain confidence weaving with multiple shuttles at the same time, while also learning to perfect your beat and turn pleasing edges. Starting with graphed patterns, the secrets of the pattern structure will become clear as you graph your own designs, and before you know it you will understand how using multiple shuttles paints your pictures in wool. Halfway through the class you’ll change up your treadling on the same threading, and you can then choose which approach you prefer. The class will end with finishing off your sampler so that you feel ready to weave a rug at home! A Harrisville Designs Model A4 loom is provided, along with all necessary equipment and our 100% woolen yarns in 64 colors.

Skill Level: Intermediate. Students should be proficient at dressing a loom, have experience warping a loom with cotton, and be able to read a draft independently.

Materials needed: Students need to bring two 1/2 pound spools of black or natural 8/4 cotton such as Brassard et Fils, depending on preference for a light or dark base weft color. A notebook, ruler, scissors, pencil, and slippers or socks are also recommended for this class.

Cancellation Deadline: 8/19/2025

MEET YOUR TEACHER

Stephanie Morton studied ethnic weaving in various countries while at Friends World College. She has since continued weaving and dyeing using traditional hand tools, looms and techniques; she is committed to slow, sustainable textile practices using recycled and local materials. A professional weaver and instructor with a studio in Guilderland, New York, Stephanie’s work continues to be guided by the idea that fabrics made by human hands are imbued with something more than just technical excellence; they express human ideas, energy and emotion that enrich their practical value.

About Our Workshops

Nestled in the heart of a historic textile village, workshops at Harrisville Designs take place in the Bethuel Harris Mill. Built in the 1830s as a spinning mill for locally raised wool and located at the end of the canal, it originally operated on water power. Today, it’s home to our first-floor retail store and spacious second-floor workshop studio. Year after year students are greeted by sunlit windows, fresh air, and tranquil views of the mill pond and preserved industrial brick buildings.

Workshops vary in skill levels and lengths. Enrollment is limited to ensure each student is immersed in the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom. Most scheduled classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while their class is in session. Looms are provided in the weaving classes, and woolen yarn and other materials are included unless otherwise noted in the materials lists online. While taking a class, students receive a 10% discount on HD items in our store, including looms! (Excludes sale and consignment items)
