Learn how to spin an intentional yarn - and find the answers to the whys and hows of yarn construction. Combining technical and intuitive approaches to spinning, Yarnitecture author Jillian Moreno provides a fluid knowledge of foundational spinning skills - and shares why there is never only one way to make a yarn. You’ll explore techniques for spinning color without dyeing. Working with solid colors and hand painted braids, you’ll also mix, blend, and manipulate color and color flow to create yarns both unique and beautiful. You’ll play and experiment with fibers, gain an enthusiasm for sampling, and come to see that your own definition of beautiful, consistent or perfect yarn is the only one that matters. By the end of this 5-day workshop, you’ll spin an intentional yarn for a specific project of your choosing and leave with the tools to create the yarns you envision!

Skill Level: Advanced beginner to intermediate. Students must be able to spin a continuous yarn and bring their own spinning wheel. Adventurous beginners who can make a continuous yarn will dive deeper into spinning basics; more experienced spinners will experiment beyond the yarns they have been making.

Materials Needed:
Spinning wheel in good working order (there will not be time to fix wheels during class)
3 extra bobbins
Lazy Kate

About Our Workshops

Nestled in the heart of a historic textile village, workshops at Harrisville Designs take place in the Bethuel Harris Mill. Built in the 1830s as a spinning mill for locally raised wool and located at the end of the canal, it originally operated on water power. Today, it’s home to our first-floor retail store and spacious second-floor workshop studio. Year after year students are greeted by sunlit windows, fresh air, and tranquil views of the mill pond and preserved industrial brick buildings.

Workshops vary in skill levels and lengths. Enrollment is limited to ensure each student is immersed in the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom. Most scheduled classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while their class is in session. Looms are provided in the weaving classes, and woolen yarn and other materials are included unless otherwise noted in the materials lists online. While taking a class, students receive a 10% discount on HD items in our store, including looms! (Excludes sale and consignment items)
