Krokbragd Rug Adventures! with Stephanie Morton (AUG 5-9)
*OPTIONAL BOARDING HOUSE ROOM RESERVATION (THIS HOLDS YOUR SPOT, ROOM FEES + TAX DUE AT THE END OF YOUR STAY)
August 5-9 (MON-FRI, 9 AM–4 PM)
Journey into the exquisite world of Krokbragd rug weaving using Harrisville Designs Highland wool! Over the course of the 5-day workshop you’ll explore how this 3-harness, weft-faced weave structure builds patterns by using multiple colorful shuttles. Known in Norway as Krokbragd (crooked path), and treskaft (3 shaft) in Sweden, this simple structure can result in the most wonderful geometric patterns. An intensive, yet beautifully vibrant class, instructor Stephanie Morton will help you understand how patterns are built by the changing of shuttles as you weave samplers following graphed patterns, followed by your own designing on the loom. With a career dedicated to carrying forward the tradition of creating textiles with natural local materials, Stephanie will share how to manage multiple shuttles at the same time, perfect your edges and control your beat. You’ll finish sampler backs and try various header finishings and then take your samplers home to create a rug designed by you!
Skill level: Intermediate. Students should be proficient at dressing a loom, have experience warping a loom with cotton, and reading a draft independently. A Harrisville loom will be provided, along with all necessary weaving accessories and equipment.
Materials needed: Students need to bring two 1/2 pound spools of black or natural 8/4 cotton such as Brassard et Fils, dependent upon a light or dark base weft color. A notebook, ruler, scissors, pencil, slippers or socks, are also recommended for this class.

About Our Workshops
Nestled in the heart of a historic textile village, workshops at Harrisville Designs take place in the Bethuel Harris Mill. Built in the 1830s as a spinning mill for locally raised wool and located at the end of the canal, it originally operated on water power. Today, it’s home to our first-floor retail store and spacious second-floor workshop studio. Year after year students are greeted by sunlit windows, fresh air, and tranquil views of the mill pond and preserved industrial brick buildings.
Workshops vary in skill levels and lengths. Enrollment is limited to ensure each student is immersed in the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom. Most scheduled classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while their class is in session. Looms are provided in the weaving classes, and woolen yarn and other materials are included unless otherwise noted in the materials lists online. While taking a class, students receive a 10% discount on HD items in our store, including looms! (Excludes sale and consignment items)
