Two-at-a-Time Socks & the Afterthought Heel with Ann Weaver (OCT 14)
OCT. 14 (SAT., 1 PM–4 PM)
Learn to knit TWO SOCKS AT A TIME! Using the ‘from the toe up using the magic loop method’ you’ll knit two mini-socks at the same time using worsted weight yarn. Knitting from the toe up enables you to try on your socks as you knit, ensuring the best possible fit, and knitting two socks at a time eliminates second-sock syndrome. Under Ann Weaver’s experienced eye, you’ll cast on, shape the toes, shape the heels, and bind off. When you leave, you’ll be ready to cast on for real socks using small needles if you choose. Plus, by working an afterthought heel, you can knit mindlessly on your sock tube while traveling or watching movies and work the part that requires concentration—the heel—at the end. It also enables you to fit the sock perfectly to the intended wearer’s foot, eliminating the need to try on the sock while you are knitting it or have the recipient’s foot measurements handy.
Skill Level: Advanced beginner. Sock knitting experience of any kind (toe-up or top-down). Comfort with picking up stitches.
Materials needed:
You can start a full-sized sock at the end of the workshop if you like, so bring fingering weight yarn and a 32-inch US Size 1 or 2 circular needle if you have one. If you don’t, you can pick them up on the day of the workshop.
US Size 7, set of 4 double-pointed needles or 32-inch circular needle for magic loop
Two stitch markers
Small amount (20 grams is plenty) of worsted-weight yarn in each of two colors: one color for knitting the practice tube and one color for knitting the heel. I recommend smooth yarn in light, solid colors.

About Our Workshops
Nestled in the heart of a historic textile village, workshops at Harrisville Designs take place in the Bethuel Harris Mill. Built in the 1830s as a spinning mill for locally raised wool and located at the end of the canal, it originally operated on water power. Today, it’s home to our first-floor retail store and spacious second-floor workshop studio. Year after year students are greeted by sunlit windows, fresh air, and tranquil views of the mill pond and preserved industrial brick buildings.
Workshops vary in skill levels and lengths. Enrollment is limited to ensure each student is immersed in the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom. Most scheduled classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while their class is in session. Looms are provided in the weaving classes, and woolen yarn and other materials are included in the tuition, unless otherwise noted in the materials lists online. While taking a class, students receive a 10% discount on all items in our store, including looms! (Excludes sale and consignment items)
Withdrawal/Refund Policy
Please note our 2023 cancellation and refund policy includes a non-refundable $100.00 registration fee per workshop. In the case must withdraw, you have 8 weeks prior to class for a full tuition refund, less the registration fee. After this date all payments are non-refundable, no exceptions. Thank you for your understanding!
