3 End Block Weave
June 17 - 21 (Mon – Fri)
3 End Block Weave is the same structure Jason uses to weave all his rugs. Students will start with simple two-color designs and move on to designing within the blocks and then introduce a third color. Techniques such as clasped wefts and dovetailing will be looked at to further increase the design scope of this structure. 2/1 double-faced twill will also be covered in this class. Special emphasis will be placed on Shaft Switching, every one being able to adapt their looms, in class, to try out this exciting technique.
Please note: This is not a beginning weaving class. Students must be able to warp and weave on a floor loom. You will be making a sampler and learning rug weaving techniques on a Harrisville 22” floor loom. Class will include instruction on how to set up the loom correctly for rug weaving. Twining at the beginning and end of the rug, darning in of the loose ends, use of the temple and many other invaluable tips for successful rug weaving will be covered. Each class concludes with a look at rug finishes, and a few of the many finishes will be demonstrated.
About the Instructor
Jason Collingwood briefly learned to weave when he was 18, but decided to try to become a rock star instead. Six years later he returned to weaving rugs and set up his own workshop in 1986 which is located in Nayland, Suffolk. Over the past 29 years he has woven to commission somewhere in the region of 2500 rugs! Most of the rugs have been for private individuals although some have been for corporate clients, architects, and interior designers. He has done large commissions including 24 rugs for the Sheraton Hotel in dar-es-salaam, in Tanzania: a series of rugs for a castle in Switzerland and most recently, working with the Spanish Fashion House LOEWE, producing all the rugs for their Madrid Flagship store. In addition to designing and weaving, Jason spends 3 -4 months each year teaching at various art schools in North America, Australia and Europe. He lives in London with his wife, Akiko, who is an internationally recognized ceramicist.
