Create and sew your own pair of linen overalls from start to finish!  In this class, we will work through each step of garment construction and sewing, using the linen overalls pattern designed by Andrea Hungerford.  Measurement and sizing, how to lay out and cut out pattern pieces, and all steps of sewing and finishing your overalls will be covered.  Learn sewing tips and tricks along the way that will set you up for success.  This is a great pattern for beginning garment makers - it looks fabulous in a variety of fabrics, and has lots of positive ease so it’s easy to fit and flattering on a wide variety of body sizes and shapes.

Fabric (linen or linen/cotton blend - sample is sewn in Merchant & Mills Laundered Linen) -  Students are welcome to contact the instructor ahead of time if they need suggestions for fabric or have a proposed fabric they'd like to use.

  • Tailors chalk or other fabric marking tool

Required Skills:  Knowledge of basic sewing machine skills; some simple apparel sewing experience is helpful, but not required 

Level:  Beginner / Advanced Beginner apparel sewing.  Open to anyone who has basic sewing machine skills.

Instructor Bio:  Andrea Hungerford is the founder and creative director of By Hand Serial, a series of community-based lookbooks that focus on fiber and fabric making communities around the country. She is an obsessive knitter and sewist who lives with her husband, three daughters and three cats, a Great Pyrenees farm dog, and a variety of chickens on acreage outside of Portland, Oregon.  Andrea has never met a hand craft that doesn’t intrigue her, and her current repertoire of making includes sewing, quilting, embroidery, mosaics, hand thrown pottery, canning, candlemaking, photography, and anything involving fiber and fabric (learn more about her creative adventures at She is currently designing both knitting patterns and apparel sewing patterns, many of which are featured in the By Hand books. In her non-making time, Andrea is the managing partner in a law firm representing Oregon school districts.

Since 1971, we have sponsored workshops to give students the opportunity to study with exceptional instructors in the relaxed atmosphere of this unique village. Our workshops are held on the second floor of the Bethuel Harris Mill which sits at the end of the canal overlooking the mill pond and originally operated on water-power. This beautiful brick building was built in the 1830’s as a spinning mill for locally raised wools and it now houses our retail shop on the first floor and provides excellent studio space for our students on the second floor. It is relished for its sunlit windows, fresh air and tranquility. In order to create the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom, we limit enrollment in our workshops. Most classes meet daily from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while class is in session. During the 5 day classes, students will have the opportunity to tour our spinning mill and listen to a talk on the history of Harrisville. Yarn and other materials for the workshops are usually included in the tuition unless otherwise noted.
Withdrawal/Refund Policy: Tuition includes a non-refundable $50.00 registration fee for each workshop. Students who must withdraw have 5 weeks prior to class for a full tuition refund less the registration fee. After this date all payments are non-refundable.
