OCT. 7 (FRI. 1 PM–4 PM)

New to colorwork? Learn to knit Fair Isle or stranded knitting using two colors per round. Want to attempt a new method of knitting Fair Isle? Learn to knit with one color in each hand, two colors in your right hand, or two colors in your left hand. Throughout this upbeat afternoon workshop, you’ll use small, intuitive colorwork patterns from the Madison Park hat that will enable you to focus on your technique. Because there are no long floats in this pattern, you won’t need to worry about catching your yarn when working with two colors. By the time you finish, you’ll be comfortable with your chosen method and have taken basic steps towards competency in the proud traditions of Fair Isle knitting!

Skills Level: Students must be able to knit in the round, and be comfortable with basic increases and decreases.

Boarding house reservation options are connected to the morning class. If you are not attending the morning class and want to inquire on available rooms to stay in, please call us at 603-827-3996 or email us at classes@harrisville.com.

Materials needed:

    • 16-inch US Size 4 and US Size 5 circular needles
    • Stitch marker
    • Row counter (optional but helpful)
    • DK weight yarn: You’ll need about 215 yards of DK weight yarn total: 125 yards in A, the main color, and 30 yards each in B, C, and D. Alternatively, you can knit the hat using two colors.
    • Madison Park pattern, available on Ravelry here

Homework: Cast on and knit the ribbing of your hat. Work from the beginning of the Instructions in the pattern to the Inc Rnd line. You’ll be ready to start the colorwork portion.

About Our Workshops

Nestled in the heart of a historic textile village, workshops at Harrisville Designs take place in the Bethuel Harris Mill. Built in the 1830s as a spinning mill for locally raised wool and located at the end of the canal, it originally operated on water power. Today, it’s home to our first-floor retail store and spacious second-floor workshop studio. Year after year students are greeted by sunlit windows, fresh air, and tranquil views of the mill pond and preserved industrial brick buildings.

Workshops vary in skill levels and lengths. Enrollment is limited to ensure each student is immersed in the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom. Most scheduled classes meet from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while their class is in session. Looms are provided in the weaving classes, and woolen yarn and other materials are included in the tuition, unless otherwise noted in the materials lists online. While taking a class, students receive a 10% discount on all items in our store, including looms! (Excludes sale and consignment items) You can view a PDF of our full workshop brochure here

Withdrawal/Refund Policy

Tuition includes a non-refundable $50.00 registration fee for each workshop. Students who must withdraw have 5 weeks prior to class for a full tuition refund less the registration fee. After this date all payments are non-refundable.

COVID-19 Protocols

Students and teachers are required to be up to date on all CDC recommended COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, as eligible. Please bring proof of vaccination status. We recommend taking a self-test before arrival on the first day. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we reserve the right to cancel the class at any time for safety reasons. If it’s necessary for Harrisville Designs to cancel a class due to COVID-19 concerns, students will receive a full refund.
