Have you been intrigued by the idea of weaving but feel intimidated by the formidable mechanics of the floor loom? Me too! Freeform tapestry weaving is an expressive, process-oriented way to explore traditional handweaving techniques to create a piece that is personal and unique. A standing tabletop loom enables us to incorporate a wealth of textures such as fluffy roving, long fleece locks, silk ribbon, cotton punis, and handspun art yarn. We'll learn how to set up the loom and plan a design. Using various weave structures and knotting methods, we'll discover how to achieve geometric shapes and contours.

At the end of class, everyone will have completed their own sampler tapestry to take home.  All equipment, tools, and materials will be provided, including handspun yarn, hand-dyed roving, wool and mohair locks, eco-printed silk and wool gauze ribbon, linen paper yarn, and more.

Participants are invited to bring any special fibers or yarn they might like to include in their works, and looms will be available for purchase at the end of class.

Instructor Bio:  Anne Choi is a fiber enthusiast who believes in the inherent goodness of all natural fibers, and is committed to supporting local fiber farms and mills.  She offers classes in spinning, weaving, and dyeing at fiber festivals and yarn shops across the country, and at her teaching studio on the farm.  Her classes explore the relationship between craft and imagination.  Participants are encouraged to investigate time-honored traditions, infused with contemporary techniques and personal vision.  She exhibits her freeform tapestries locally, with recent works displayed at the Gallery on Division in Somerville, NJ, and the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, in Madison, NJ.  She  raises a small flock of Shetland sheep in Bedminster, NJ, and never tires of watching them grow their fleeces.  Anne is a member of the North American Shetland Sheep Association, and a trustee of the Garden State Sheep Breeders.  She is the founder of NJ Fibershed, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a network among small small fiber farmers across the state of New Jersey, and providing educational resources for first-generation farmers and to the public.

Since 1971, we have sponsored workshops to give students the opportunity to study with exceptional instructors in the relaxed atmosphere of this unique village. Our workshops are held on the second floor of the Bethuel Harris Mill which sits at the end of the canal overlooking the mill pond and originally operated on water-power. This beautiful brick building was built in the 1830’s as a spinning mill for locally raised wools and it now houses our retail shop on the first floor and provides excellent studio space for our students on the second floor. It is relished for its sunlit windows, fresh air and tranquility. In order to create the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom, we limit enrollment in our workshops. Most classes meet daily from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while class is in session. During the 5 day classes, students will have the opportunity to tour our spinning mill and listen to a talk on the history of Harrisville. Yarn and other materials for the workshops are usually included in the tuition unless otherwise noted.
Withdrawal/Refund Policy: Tuition includes a non-refundable $50.00 registration fee for each workshop. Students who must withdraw have 5 weeks prior to class for a full tuition refund less the registration fee. After this date all payments are non-refundable.
