Sat 8/15/2020, 10:00 AM to Sun 8/16/2020, 4:00 PM

The class begins with an introduction to basic artistic color theory, then reveals how to streamline and focus certain aspects of color theory to generate interesting, naturally inspired palettes. Attendees will use the Harrisville Shetland and Highland’s extensive color range to realize these color combinations and will create, then take home, their own set of color cards using this method. Students will also learn about the Hudson Valley art movement, a heavily influential and local American landscape painting movement, and follow with studies on current local painters who have continued to draw on inspiration from the region. Depending on student interest and the weather, we may take a local art oriented field trip one of the afternoons.

Armed with their own color sets, attendees will then learn how to evaluate imagery and inspiration of their own, and with provided materials, to decipher and develop pleasing color combinations that they can then use in weavings, embroideries, knitting and crochet projects, felted fabrics, and more.

The workshop has peg looms, floor looms, and a variety of knitting needles on hand, but it is always good to bring your own hooks, needles, or other preferred supplies if you are able.

Skill level: All levels

Since 1971, we have sponsored workshops to give students the opportunity to study with exceptional instructors in the relaxed atmosphere of this unique village. Our workshops are held on the second floor of the Bethuel Harris Mill which sits at the end of the canal overlooking the mill pond and originally operated on water-power. This beautiful brick building was built in the 1830’s as a spinning mill for locally raised wools and it now houses our retail shop on the first floor and provides excellent studio space for our students on the second floor. It is relished for its sunlit windows, fresh air and tranquility. In order to create the atmosphere of a working studio rather than a classroom, we limit enrollment in our workshops. Most classes meet daily from 9 am to 4 pm; however, the studio is open to students 24 hours a day while class is in session. During the 5 day classes, students will have the opportunity to tour our spinning mill and listen to a talk on the history of Harrisville. Yarn and other materials for the workshops are usually included in the tuition unless otherwise noted.
Withdrawal/Refund Policy: Tuition includes a non-refundable $50.00 registration fee for each workshop. Students who must withdraw have 5 weeks prior to class for a full tuition refund less the registration fee. After this date all payments are non-refundable.
